Allen Iverson could've been a Laker......THIS YEAR.
In some new and actually exciting Iverson news that doesn’t have him going overseas again to PUERTO RICO (of all places), I just read via the Smoking Section that Iverson could’ve possibly been playing for the Los Angeles Lakers this season. Yep, they were one of the NBA teams crazy enough to give A.I. a chance -provided that he spend some time in the D-League. Well, joining the Developmental League is a no-no, at least for Iverson, and I agree. It’s glad to know the man has some pride left. The Lakers gracious offer is basically a slap in the face to a player who once was the best in the league hands down, and that not just the teenage Iverson fan in me speaking; anyone will tell you this. Further, Iverson is still a future First Ballot Hall of Famer. That should count for something, right? He shouldn’t have anything more to prove, especially in the D-League alongside the NBA’s rejects. I’m sure he’d rather retire than follow in the footsteps of Antoine Walker. Of course, Iverson has his own problems, and has become a tragic story in his own right, but can you “Question” his game? I mean….he is the Answer.
Of course many would simply say, “beggars can’t be choosers”, and I agree to an extent. Iverson should be desperate to get back into the NBA by any means but, right about now, the Lakers are just as desperate for a point guard or anything that can help Kobe get that sixth ring. Sadly, it could not be CP3, and it probably won’t be Dwight. So really, who’s the beggar here? Keep in mind, the Lakers are now looking at signing GILBERT ARENAS, who is arguably as much of a risk as Iverson. In my opinion, Iverson would fit much better for their needs (anything to get Fisher out that starting pg position). For the record, I think he could start at point and easily give them some assists, scoring, and the much needed spark they’ve seemed to have lost.
Well, Iverson turned down the spot on the LA Defenders so there’s no need for me entertain the thought of how Iverson would help the Lakers. However, something in me believes that if Kobe wanted Iverson on his team, it would’ve happened…. like yesterday. And if Iverson really wanted to play with Kobe, he’d be in the D-League right now. A back court of the Answer and the Black Mamba, even in their 30’s ) would be a sight to see indeed, but It’ll never happen. I know one thing though, it would be about as big of a story as our boy Jeremy Lin in New York if it actually did. But think about it, if an undrafted Asian kid from Harvard can hold his own as a starting PG in the NBA given the opportunity, what makes LA think Allen Iverson can’t?
